A tall, powerful defender who doesn’t shy away from a scrap, Nathan Baker is making fast strides towards the Aston Villa first team squad. Quietly impressing the key management staff at Villa Park, he’s already been involved with the first team in friendly action, and isn’t far off doing the same when it matters.
Strong performances for the Under-18s and then the Reserves – both in successful teams built on solid defence – earned Baker some rave reviews at a club which has produced a high number of defenders in recent times. He likes to take charge at the back, going to win the ball positively and leading with his performances, as well as being a danger from attacking set pieces – and not just with his head. He’s capable with his feet and possesses surprising agility for a player his size.
Having joined Martin O’Neill’s senior squad at the start of the season on a camp to Switzerland, Baker signed a three-year professional deal in September. He was given the number 48 shirt during the season and travelled with the first team on occasion, particularly in Cup competitions. He has received England Under-19 recognition, and having overcome a spate of injuries earlier in his Villa career, is now seemingly well on the way to stardom.
