Jon Obika may have famous family in the form of pop singer cousin Lemar, but he’s on his way to making his own name. A prolific goalscorer in the Tottenham academy, he’s hit the scene relatively late compared to some prospects, but he’s there on merit.
Operating wide left or in attack, Obika has fantastic physical tools, most strikingly his pace and a left foot which he can strike a ball extremely well with. After a first scholarship year which was unremarkable, he hit 14 goals in 26 academy games in 07/08 and scored on his Reserve debut as he began to establish himself at that level.
He has some way to go to reach the top because he’s quite raw, but he’s showing more and more promise each game.
Obika’s progress in 08/09 will have astounded even him. Benefitting from leading the line in a prolific Tottenham academy team, he’s regularly been amongst the goals, and as such has had the opportunity to impress in competitions the club are less interested in. As such, he has made his senior debut in the UEFA Cup against NEC Nijmegen and was an unused sub in two further UEFA Cup matches before featuring again in the return leg against Shakhtar Donetsk.
He signed a two-year professional deal in January of 2009 before heading to Yeovil on loan in League One in March to gain first-team experience.
