The legend of Federico Macheda continues to grow. Last Sunday, he came off the bench to earn a crucial three points for Manchester United at home to Aston Villa, crowning a wonderful debut with a stoppage time stunner. A week later, he needed just sixty seconds to find the scoresheet at Sunderland.
Having witnessed Kenwyne Jones equalise Paul Scholes’ opener, and with Liverpool having won comfortably earlier in the day, Sir Alex Ferguson introduced his young Italian with fifteen minutes remaining at the Stadium of Light, desperate for some more magic. Within a minute, Michael Carrick’s shot fell into Macheda’s path, and whether instinct, luck, or intention, he stuck a foot out and deflected the shot into the bottom corner. In sealing another massive three points towards the title, Macheda is earning himself something of a reputation as a super-sub.
